Moccamaster with Mold Solution Concentrate

My husband and I have tried every way we know how to make coffee: french press, pour over, Aeropress, Chemex, Bialetti -- see what I mean?! My absolute favorite method flavor-wise is Chemex. It's so clean tasting. However, the process is longer than most; typically a weekend only activity for us. My husband finally talked me into getting an automatic pour over style coffeemaker - I am not a fan of typical coffee makers due to how gross they get inside, mostly due to an inability to clean and then harbor mold. But our machine is easy to clean, fast and tasty--so much so, I don't reach for the Chemex very often! There are two steps to cleaning the machine: the outside and the inside.

Before I get into details, I must mention that this is how I've been cleaning my machine for two years now, but it is not officially what is recommended by the manufacturer. They have specific descaling tablets for the machine. However, I try to avoid chemical cleaners like that when at all possible. I've also heard of people using vinegar, but then having to replace their machine earlier than expected - I think this is because vinegar can eat up the plastic parts over time? Anyways, I am not recommending this, just showing what I personally do. Remember, my page is for entertainment only.

Outside:

This is pretty easy. I like to wash the loose parts in hot, soapy water. This includes:

  • Water reservoir lid

  • Filter lid

  • Filter

  • Glass Carafe + lid

I wipe down the base and the rest of the outside with EC3 Wipes (affiliate code: SATIATEDBLONDE). They're easy to use and help maintain the cleanliness of the outside of the machine in between deep cleans.

The wipes don't smell to me (unless I put my nose in the container) and they do such a great job! Who knew I'd been missing nontoxic cleaning wipes my whole life?!

Gently, I took off the water spout and wiped it as well. It gets dirty from the coffee backsplash - mostly from when I forget to put the filter lid on...it only happens sometimes, guys!

Look how much better that looks!

Inside:

Okay, I was a little hesitant about running something not recommended in the machine, but I am more concerned about ingesting descaling tablet residue than this nontoxic Mold Solution Concentrate. Plus, it has worked so well on many of my other projects...so, here it goes!

holding msc in front of coffee maker

  • I added 1/3 cup of Mold Solution Concentrate into the water basin

  • Next, I added water to the fill line

  • Then, I ran the coffee machine, just like I was making coffee but minus the filter. NOTE: do not forget to replace the rest of the outside parts that I wash in soapy water, especially the carafe!!!

  • Finally, I did three more runs of water only (no MSC) to rinse away any possible residue

And that's it. Next time I ran it was for a full pot of coffee and it had no weird taste, and the run time was actually faster!
