Learning the Basics: My First Experience Curling

The Satiated Blonde

group pic on curling ice

For my husband's birthday, we went curling. Yep, that's right, that Olympic sport everyone thinks is the easiest...turns out it's not. But, it is a lot of fun!

We got there early since it was our first time. They told us to dress warm (for 40 degree weather and preferably not jeans) and to bring a pair of tennis shoes as we weren't allowed on the ice with the shoes we wore in (makes sense). Our instructor started giving us the basics off-ice at the learn-to-curl event (which fills up quite fast). This included finding a pair of grippers to put on over the clean shoes we brought with us. It's amazing how well they worked on the ice.

Above are the grippers slipped over top of my minimalist style shoes. Below is my first curl. I'd like to say I didn't fall over every time, but I did. E V E R Y time, lol.

We practiced sweeping, too. I didn't get too much footage because we were really just in the moment and the time went by so fast. Oh, and it's worth mentioning that the ice is not the same as ice skating ice. It is made to have little bubbles/beads of frozen water on it so it has a texture. I'd definitely like to go back and try, try again. Maybe one day we will!

Have you curled before? Tell me all about it in the comments. Wanna watch next time I curl? Be sure to follow me here so you don't miss it!
